Corneal Crosslinking (CXL)

The Only Proven Way to Halt Keratoconus Progression

Keratoconus is a progressive disorder where the cornea thins and changes shape, causing blurred vision due to irregular astigmatism. This condition typically worsens over time, leading to significant visual impairment.

Vision Stabilisation, Permanent Protection
Corneal Crosslinking (CXL) is the only treatment proven to halt the progression of Keratoconus. Our specialist care focuses on permanently strengthening the cornea to stabilise your vision, preventing the need for a corneal transplant in the future.
Why Choose Our Specialists?

Our focus is on precision, safety, and long-term clarity, ensuring you receive the highest standard of care for growths on the surface of your eye.

Permanent Vision Preservation

Halt Progression for Life
In the majority of cases, a single CXL treatment will completely halt the progression of keratoconus and stabilise the corneal shape for the rest of your life.
Prevent Transplant
Without CXL, approximately 20% of people with keratoconus will develop severe vision loss requiring a corneal transplant. CXL is a vision-saving treatment that prevents this outcome.
Custom Strengthening
CXL works by using Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and ultraviolet (UV) light to induce strong bonds ('cross links') between the collagen fibres (structural elements) in the cornea, making it resistant to thinning and distortion.
Treatment Options Tailored to You

We assess your cornea to determine the optimal CXL protocol, ensuring maximum effectiveness and comfort

Epithelium-Off (Gold Standard)
This involves gently removing the outer protective layer of the cornea to ensure maximum riboflavin penetration. This is considered the original gold standard and may achieve greater corneal flattening (shape improvement), but involves a longer initial recovery.
Epithelium-On (Transepithelial)
This technique uses a modified riboflavin to penetrate the intact outer layer. Leaving the epithelium intact results in less discomfort after surgery, faster recovery, and may reduce the chance of infection or other complications.
Advanced Protocols
We utilise sophisticated techniques, including high-intensity, pulsed, or personalised UV doses. These are useful for treating thinner corneas in advanced keratoconus.
