Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about appointments, surgery, recovery, and insurance—so you know exactly what to expect.
General Appointments & Scheduling
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

While many of our patients are referred by their optometrist or GP, you do not require a formal referral to book an initial consultation. However, if you have one, please bring it with you.

How quickly can I get an appointment for surgery?

We pride ourselves on short wait times. Appointments for consultation and urgent surgery are typically available within 1–2 weeks. If your case is urgent (e.g., trauma or active wet AMD), we will fast-track your visit.

How long will the appointment take?

Please allow 1 to 2 hours for your initial consultation. This time is necessary for comprehensive diagnostic testing, imaging, and discussion with your specialist. You may require dilating drops, which can blur your vision for several hours, so please arrange transport (you cannot drive yourself home).

Surgery & Recovery
Can I have both eyes operated on the same day?

Yes. For many procedures, including Cataract Surgery, we routinely perform surgery on both eyes on the same day for your convenience, safety, and faster visual recovery.

Will I feel pain during the surgery?

No. We use local anaesthetic, including no-needle techniques, to ensure your procedure is pain-free. You may feel some pressure or sensation, but no pain.

What is the recovery time?

While many of our patients are referred by their optometrist or GP, you do not require a formal referral to book an initial consultation. However, if you have one, please bring it with you.

Billing and Insurance
Are you covered by Southern Cross Health Society?

Yes, we are an Affiliated Provider with Southern Cross Health Society. We are also affiliated with all major NZ insurers (NIB, AIA, etc.). Please confirm your policy details and excess with your insurer prior to your visit.

Is ACC-funded surgery really provided at no cost?

Yes. For all ACC-approved trauma or treatment injury cases, we charge no surcharge or part charge. Your treatment is provided at absolutely no cost to you in our private clinic.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we understand surgery is an investment. Please discuss your financial needs with our patient care coordinators; we can arrange payment options if required.
